The Gatehouse

Rippon Lea Estate,

Social History,

20th Century

The Gatehouse was added by the second owner of Rippon Lea – Benjamin Nathan – in 1926. It was built for his Head Gardener Stanley Orchard, who worked here from 1914.

Architects Oakley and Parkes designed the gatehouse. They also designed a grand home for Lorna Hannan – Benjamin’s youngest daughter. It survives today in nearby Elizabeth Street.

Oakley and Parkes also designed ‘The Lodge’ in Canberra. This is the official residence of Australia’s Prime Minister.

The Caravan

The Gatehouse opened to visitors in the 1990s. Before then, we sold tickets from a caravan parked in the driveway. After the Gatehouse opened, the gardeners used the caravan as a potting shed!
